BMC sanctions Rs 9.45 cr for 7 new drains to tackle water-logging

Bhubaneswar: After hue and cry over widespread water-logging in the capital city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday sanctioned Rs 9.45 crore to construct seven new drains across the city to address the water-logging situation.

According to reports, the new plan includes construction of internal drainage system with covered slabs at Ananta Vihar Phase-II in Ward No 62, Dumduma Housing Board Colony Phase-IV in Ward No 65, Jagannath Vihar Plot No. 387 to Plot No. 59/553 (Lane-3) in Ward No 24 and Bhagabat Sandhan area in Ward No 19.

The BMC will also renovate drainage channel No. 5 in the rear side of Sriya Talkies in Ward No 42 followed by Ahalya Nagar area in Ward No. 3. Besides, construction of drain from the backside of OMFED to drainage channel No. 1 via Guru Kelu Charan Mohapatra Park Road will be carried out by the civic body.

These new drainage structures would enable discharging of water from waterlogged localities in an effective manner.

On the other hand, BMC Commissioner chaired a review meeting on water logging and drainage situation. All officers, ward officers, sanitary inspectors, engineers and experts attended the meeting in the BMC conference hall.

In the meeting, the officers were directed to keep a vigil on each low-lying area of the city. As many as 12 senior officers have been asked to personally visit 12 sub-zones with their teams for inspection and the nodal officers of every sub-zone have been asked to take stock of the situation every day and report.

The mechanical engineering wing has been asked to hire required number of pump sets to dewater the low-lying areas across the city and sanitation agencies have been asked to be present with all required number of workers and apparatus as well as vehicles.
