BMC kickstarts ‘Meal for Plastic’ drive in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: In an effort to create awareness among people to beat plastic pollution in the city, The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) began ‘Meal for Plastic’ programme here on Monday.

BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary launched the programme at an Aahaar centre near Kalpana Square here.

“Any person can get an Aahar meal coupon in exchange of 500 grams of plastic waste in all 11 Aahar centres in the Capital city,” an official said.

This initiative has been carried out by the BMC in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Touch Stone Foundation.

The representative of Touchstone Foundation at Aahaar Kendra will maintain date wise record through a register with location of Aahaar Kendra, name, mobile number, amount of plastic deposited, and sign of depositor. The register will be countersigned by the representative of Touchstone Foundation.

UNDP shall collect the plastic from the AahaarKendra on weekly basis or whenever the bins are filled, whichever is earlier as intimated by the Touchstone Foundation representative working at the Aahaar Kendra.

Notably, Kotpad Notified Area Council (NAC) in Koraput district had initiated similar programme in October this year.

On April 1, 2015, the State government launched Aahar scheme to provide cooked hot meals to the needy people at an affordable cost of Rs 5.
