BMC to charge levy for public meetings in city

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to avoid littering and to maintain sanitation and hygiene at places of public meeting, dharanas, marriage processions etc, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday decided to levy administrative and sanitation charges henceforth.

In a meeting held under the Chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, the BMC decided that from now on agitators sitting on dharna in the city will have to pay minimum Rs 500. If more than 500 persons stage protest, Rs 5 will be charged on pro rata basis per day per person. If 100 to 500 people conduct the meeting or stage dharna they will have to pay Rs 1000 per day.

The BMC has decided to levy sanitation and administrative charges for taking out marriage and other processions. The organisers of such functions and procession shall deposit Rs 5000 per day towards sanitation charges with the respective zone offices.

The meeting also decided to ban use of polythene bags/sheets etc, as many such uses will be in contraventions of Plastic Waste Management Rules- 2016.

As per BMC Mayor Anant Narayan Jena, there should be no littering on the public places and roads and ban on open defecation has been also imposed. Jena further informed that deposit of debris/construction materials on the site will not be permitted.
