BJD’s Alaka Mohanty wins Brajarajnagar byelection with huge margin

Brajarajnagar: BJD candidate Alaka Mohanty won the Brajarajnagar byelection in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district by a huge margin.

According to reports, Mohanty secured nearly 65000 votes more than her nearest rival- Congress’ Kishore Patel. BJP candidate Radharani Panda was placed in the 3rd position.

After the completion of the final round of the counting, Alaka Mohanty got 93,790 votes while Kishore Patel bagged 27,565 votes and Radharani Panda received 22316 votes.

However, the official declaration of the results is awaited.

It is to be noted here that voting for the by-election was held on May 31. A total of 11 candidates were in the fray. The counting of votes was conducted amid tight security today.

The Brajarajnagar MLA seat was lying vacant following the sad demise of former MLA Kishore Mohanty. The former Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly and former MLA Mohanty died due to a heart attack in December 2021 at the age of 63.

Mohanty first became the MLA for the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency in 1990 from the Janata Dal. Later, he won from the same constituency twice in 2000 and 2009 with Biju Janata Dal (BJD) ticket.
