BJD women protest against LPG price hike in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Members of women wing of ruling BJD staged a dharna in front of regional office of IOCL here on Thursday in protest against the hike in price of non-subsidised LPG and corruption in selection of beneficiaries under the Ujjwala yojana.

The women activists, led by Biju Mahila Janata Dal president Pramila Mallick, shouted slogans against Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan holding placards.

The members also displayed empty LPG cylinders near the IOCL office to express their ire against price rise.

Speaking to Kalinga TV, Mallick said, “The price of cooking gas has been increased by 22 times after the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre in 2014.”

She also levelled gross irregularities in selection of beneficiaries under Ujjwala yojana saying free gas connections have been given to ghost beneficiaries and people who already have LPG connection.

“The good days (“ache din”) promised by PM Modi were nowhere near. Instead, women now had to protest against the hike in the price of LPG cylinders,” said another protestor.
