BJD to raise Mahanadi, Polavaram issues in Winter Session of Parliament

KalingaTVBhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MPs will raise Mahanadi tribunal, Polavaram project, MSP hike of paddy and other issues related to the interest of Odisha during the Winter Session of Parliament which begins on Friday.

A decision in this regard was taken at the BJD’s Parliamentary Party meeting, presided by its President and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, today. All the 28 MPs of the party, 20 Lok Sabha Members and 8 Rajya Sabha Members, were present in the meeting, held at Naveen Niwas.

“BJD MPs will make demand to constitute a tribunal to resolve the Mahanadi River water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh in the Winter Session of Parliament,” said BJD spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Pratap Deb after the meeting.

“The MPs will also put pressure on Centre to stop construction of Polavaram Project until all the pending issues are finally settled in the Supreme Court,” he added.

On his part, Lok Sabha MP Kalikesh Singhdeo said, “We will press our demand to raise the minimum support price (MSP) on paddy to Rs 2930 per quintal against the existing price of Rs. 1559 per quintal.”

The meeting also decided to ask the Union Government to expedite various Railway projects in the state among other things for the interest of Odisha.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has called a meeting of floor leaders of different political parties today evening to discuss smooth functioning of the House. Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar had sought cooperation from all parties to make the session fruitful.
