BJD announces support for NDA-backed JDU’s Harivansh Narayan Singh

Bhubaneswar: Putting all speculations to the rest, BJD supremo and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced his party’s support to NDA-backed JDU MP Harivansh Narayan Singh for the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

Speaking to the reporters after returning from his two-day Mumbai tour, Patnaik said that his party will extend support to Harivansh Narayan Singh and he had spoken to PM Narendra Modi, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, BJP National President Amit Shah and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh earlier in this regard.

NCP Chief Sharad Power had also requested the BJD President to support his party’s Vandana Chavan (57).

The Congress party has nominated BK Hariprasad as its candidate for the election,

Currently, there are 244 Parliamentarians in Rajya Sabha and support of 123 members would be needed for a win in the full house. BJD has nine members in the Upper House.

With BJD’s support, the NDA candidate is all set to win the election which is to be held tomorrow.

The post of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman remained vacant after P. J. Kurien retired on June 30 this year.
