BJB CollegeBhubaneswar: Vehicular movement on the Lewis Road from Kalpana Square to Ravi Talkies here came to a grinding halt on Friday night after hundreds of BJB College students, including girls, staged a road blockade on it protesting against the cancellation of students’ union election in the college and the sine-die declaration by the principal.

Demanding immediate revocation of the sine-die order taken during a staff council meeting on Friday evening, the agitating students of the college were of the opinion that the election should have been held under tight security. They also sought a clarification from the College Principal on why a decision to hold election in the morning was reversed in the evening. Students claimed that the decision was taken in a hurry and showed college authorities lack of commitment towards college poll.

Meanwhile, hundreds of New Ladies Hostel inmates, who spent a sleepless night on Thursday inside the campus following repeated bomb hurling by miscreants, held a sit-in on the road and demanded talks with the college principal.

Notably, the college principal Mohammad Nawaz Hassan had announced cancellation of the Students’ Union poll during a staff council meeting on Friday evening citing security of students. A sin-die was also clamped in the college and hostel inmates were told to leave the premises by Saturday. The decision was taken after bombs were hurled at the New Ladies Hostel in the college on Thursday and two groups of students with allegiance to separate political parties indulged in a fight before the Arts Block in the campus.
