Baripada: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is going to fulfill yet another dream of former CM Biju Patnaik. The foundation stone of the Deo Medium Irrigation Project in Karanjia Subdivision of Mayurbhanj district was laid by Biju Babu 28 years ago but the project is now nearing its completion.

The former CM had laid the foundation stone of the much-awaited project in the upper catchment of Deo River at Hatibari village under Karanjia block with the aim to help the people of the area and improve their economy.

Water from the river has entered the dam for the first time as the project, which began twenty-eight years ago, is now nearing its completion. It looks like a lake now and around 10 thousand hectares of land would become useful for cultivation once the project gets over.

However, the project has affected a total of 840 families, to whom the State government has given compensation. The project is getting delayed due to the displacement problems. Currently, only 196 families have left the area, while others are still living there.

Meanwhile, the State government has given priority to complete it as soon as possible. The local administration is holding village-wise public hearings with an aim to sort out the displacement problems. Recently, an all-party meeting was also held during which they decided to complete the project at the earliest possible time.

Till now, 70 per cent work of the project has been completed. Only Rs 52 crore supposed to be spent on the project, however, it has now increased to over Rs 900 crore due to delay for 28 years.

Farmers of more than 100 villages of Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts are expected to get benefit from the much-awaited project.
