Bargarh: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ashok Panigrahi on Friday filed his nomination papers at the Padampur sub-collector office for the Bijepur Assembly by-poll, slated to be held on February 24.

Panigrahi along with his thousands of supporters and BJP workers reached the office of sub-collector, who is also the returning officer for the by-poll, and filed his nomination papers in the presence of BJP state unit President Basant Panda and other senior leaders.

Earlier on the day, the saffron party held a meeting in Padampur where BJP’s state-in-charge Arun Singh, Basant Panda, BJP legislature party leader KV Singh Deo and Padampur MLA Pradip Purohit and other local leaders were present.

Significantly, Panigrahi , who had won assembly election on a BJD ticket in 2000 general elections, joined the saffron party in October last year following which the then District BJP President Narayan Sahu left the party to join BJD.

BJD has fielded Rita Sahu, wife of former Congress MLA late Subal Sahu, as its candidate for the upcoming bye-poll.  She will file her nomination papers on February 5, BJD announced.

Congress is yet to announce its candidate for the by-poll.

The Bijepur Assembly seat fell vacant following the demise of three-time Congress MLA Subal Sahu in August last year.
