Bhitarkanika witnesses decline in winged guests

Kendrapara: The number of winged guests which visited the Bhitarkanika National Park this year has registered a decrease in comparison to that of last year, claims the annual bird census currently underway in Odisha.

From the enumeration of birds which was carried out yesterday in Bhitarkanika, it came to notice that only 1, 09, 059 birds of 74 species visited the area this year. The bird population was 1, 12,937 last year making the previous figure greater by 3878.

The bird census at Bhitarkanika was carried out by 14 teams, 3-4 members in each. The teams conducted the head count of the winged guests with the help of hi-tech equipment in water body of Satabhaya, Raipatia, Matha Adia, Gupti Ghat, Hansila Ghat and wide wetland of lighthouse along with the National Park.

A simultaneous census of estuarine crocodiles are also being undertaken in the area, for which the Park has been closed for tourists till January 14.

On the other hand, the number of winged guests which visited Odisha’s brackish water lake Chilika has registered an increase this year. The number has gone up from last year’s 8, 93,390 to 10, 47,968 this year.
