Bhitarkanika National Park to reopen for visitors  on August 1

Kendrapara: After remaining closed for tourists for three months in view of the mass nesting of estuarine crocodiles, the Bhitarkanika National Park here will reopen from August 1.

As per the Park authorities, as many as 92 nests of crocodiles were counted during the mating and nesting season this year which started on May 1. During this period the restriction was imposed against the human entry into the Park premise as it might disturb the congenial environment for the crocodiles.

This year one nest of the crocodile had been destroyed in high tide in the sea due to which 32 eggs have been kept at the Dangamal Crocodile Breeding and Research Centre.

As per an estimation, more than 50,000 tourists visit the Bhitarkanika National Park of 145 sqkm every year. Boating, saltwater crocodiles, resident and migrant avian species as well as a huge variety of mangrove species remain to be major attraction of this Park.
