Berhampur University declares sine die

Berhampur: The Berhampur University on Saturday declared closed sine die following student unrest in the campus after cancellation of students’ union elections.

Students have been asked to vacate their hostels by 10 AM today.

Tension erupted after the authorities rejected nomination papers of one Ajit Swain, who was contesting for the post of General Secretary, citing his criminal record.

According to reports, Swain’s name was placed in provisional list of candidates but omitted in the final list published on yesterday.

Supporters of Swain staged dharna in front of PG Council office, later staged demonstration in front VC’s residence by burning treys. They also allegedly ransacked the administrative office and locked some officials.

On the other hand, another group of students were preparing to protest against the poll cancellation order. They demanded that students’ union poll be held for 2018-19 session.

Adequate police personnel have been deployed in and around the campus to prevent any untoward incident in the university.
