BDA And BMC To Plant More Than 27000 Saplings In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) have decided to undertake a massive plantation drive in the state capital on the occasion of World Environment Day which will be observed on Wednesday.

BDA has decided to plant 23,500 saplings at 11 different sites while the civic body will plant 4250 plants at 26 different locations across the city. Officials said that the saplings will be planted in phase wise manner and emphasis will be given to wind resistant varieties.

Severe cyclonic storm Fani had extensively damaged the trees and the city almost lost its green canopy to the gusty winds of the cyclone on May 3.

The plantation drive of the BDA will mostly cover the major parks including Biju Patnaik Park, Indira Gandhi Park, Buddha Jayanti Park, Netaji Subash Bose Park, APJ Abdul Kalam Park and Janata Maidan.

“BDA has suffered massive tree loss of more than 10000 trees in various parks while another 2000 trees were also uprooted in plantation sites. Similarly, as per the estimation of the BMC, 623 trees were damaged within the 67 wards under the BMC area,” said an official.
