Banned polythene, plastic materials worth Rs 50 lakh seized in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The Special Squad of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) seized quintals of prohibited polythene bags and other plastic material from a godown in Saheed Nagar area here in Odisha on Thursday.

The estimated cost of seizure materials was over Rs 50 lakhs, said an official.

Based on tip-off about the banned items being stored inside a godown in the area, BMC squad raided the spot and seized quintals of banned polythene bags and other plastic materials that include glasses, cups, plates, and spoons from a godown.

Later, the officials of the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) have been informed in this connection.

The plastic items were reportedly bought from West Bengal and Gujarat and supplied to various eateries in the city.

Notably,  the Government of Odisha had on October 2 banned single-use plastic in urban areas across the state.
