Melbourne:  In a significant development, Steven Smith and David Warner have been banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia (CA) in connection to their roles in the pre-meditated plan to tamper the ball on the third day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa.

Cameron Bancroft, the player who actually tampered with the ball, has been banned for nine months by the CA.

The Board also banned Warner and Smith, formerly captain and vice-captain of Australia, from captaining the national team for the next two years.

Earlier, the batting trio Smith, Warner and Bancroft have all been ordered home from South Africa in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal which has rocked the cricketing world.

All players will have the right to challenge their verdicts and also the duration of their penalties, CA sources said.

On Tuesday, CA chief executive James Sutherland revealed the trio of Smith, Warner and Bancroft were the only members in the Australian squad or support staff who had any knowledge of the plan to deliberately tamper the ball.

The trio were found to have breached Article 2.3.5 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to conduct at any time that is contrary to the spirit of the game, unbecoming of a representative, harmful to the interests of the game, or bringing the game into disrepute.

With a view to replace the batting trio, Matthew Renshaw, Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell have been called up to join the national team while wicket-keeper Tim Paine has been appointed as captain of Australia for the fourth Test in South Africa starting on Friday.

Both Warner and Smith also stepped down as captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) teams Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals respectively.
