Balasore SP Niti Shekhar Fined Rs 1 Lakh For Not Providing RTI Information

Balasore: A fine of Rs One lakh was slapped on Balasore SP, Niti Shekhar for refusing to provide information to an Right To Information (RTI) activist.

The fine was slapped by Odisha Information Commission which also directed the SP to provide the information to the RTI activist within a week’s time.

An RTI activist Banaja Manjari Mishra had filed for an RTI on the arrest of a person identified as Subrat Behera of Bhogarai area in three cases at a time registered against him at Khaira, Simulia and Soro police stations back in 2016.

However, there was delay on the part of Niti Shekhar to reply to the RTI following which Mishra had moved to Odisha Information Commission.

The Odisha Information Commission ordered him to pay a fine of Rs one  lakh and also directed him to furnish all the information to the RTI activist within a week.

    How can the maximum fine limit of Rs.25000/- be exceeded by the State Commission?Looks like an instance over activism and excess use of its jurisdiction by the SIC.
