Bhubaneswar: Congress Chief Whip in Odisha Assembly Tara Prasad Bahinipati on Thursday thanked Prasad Harichandan who tendered his resignation as the President of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) yesterday. Besides, he called former PCC Chief Niranjan Patnaik as the best choice to lead the grand old party in the state.

“I thank Prasad Harichandan for tendering his resignation. He should have resigned soon after the last Panchayat elections, where the party lost very badly. All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Rahul Gandhi should take immediate steps to appoint new OPCC Chief. Niranjan Patnaik is the best choice,” said the Jeypore MLA in his reaction over Harichandan’s resignation while speaking to the newsmen.

“Since the general election will be held after some months, we all should work together and work aggressively by co-operating with the new PCC Chief, whom Rahul Gandhi will appoint, so that the party can do well in the election,” he added.

Hours after Niranjan held the state PCC and AICC responsible for party’s dismal performance in the Bijepur by-election, results of which were declared yesterday, Prasad Harichandan resigned from the post of OPCC on moral grounds. AICC in-charge of Odisha B. K Hariprasad informed that Harichandan has sent his resignation letter to the party high command.

Harichandan had assumed the OPCC President post in December 2014. However, he had been facing strong opposition from many senior party leaders and party MLAs especially after a poor show by Congress in last Panchayat elections. Some of them even had approached Rahul Gandhi demanding change of the party guard in the state.
