Baby Girl Born With A Rare Skin Disorder In Odisha

Berhampur: Odisha reported first case of a baby born with Harlequin Ichthyosis, a rare genetic skin disorder at MKCG medical Berhampur at the wee hours of the morning.

The baby girl was born at 2.40 AM last night.

Harlequin Ichthyosis literally means one born with dry, scaly ‘fish’ like skin. It affects one in 300,000 births by inheriting a mutated gene from the parents.

Infants with this condition have very hard, thick skin covering most of their bodies. This is broken into large, diamond-shaped plates separated by deep cracks (fissures).

The facial features mouth, eyes and ears are also deformed giving them a ghastly appearance.

These babies hardly survive for a day or two.

Earlier, one such case was reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra in 2016 which is believed to be the first baby suffering from the rare disease. The infant could not survive long days and succumbed to the disease days after its birth, sources said.
