asaram-bapu 1New Delhi: Amidst protest and violence by followers of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in north India after the self-proclaimed godman was convicted for rape on August 25, the Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Gujarat government over the slow pace of trial in the rape case involving another self-styled godman Asaram Bapu.

The apex court questioned the Gujarat government as to why the victim of sexual assault case involving Asaram has not been examined till date and directed the State government to file an affidavit in this connection.

On April 12, The Supreme Court had asked a Gujarat trial court to expedite recording of evidence of prosecution witnesses in a sexual assault case lodged by two Surat-based sisters against Asaram.

Currently, Asaram is in Jodhpur prison in Rajasthan. He was booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, after a complaint of sexual assault by a teenage girl at his ashram in 2013.
