Bhubaneswar: Where there is a will, there is a way. This proverb fits quite well for twenty-three-year-old Anupriya Lakra from Maoist-hit Malkangiri district in Odisha.

Anupriya has made her family and the state proud by becoming the first tribal woman pilot from Malkangiri, which is a backward district with no proper road connectivity until a few years ago, let alone rail or air link.

The tribal girl gave up engineering midway seven years ago to fulfil her dream of becoming a pilot.

Daughter of Mariniyas Lakra, a Havildar in Odisha Police and Jamaj Yashmin Lakra, a homemaker, Anupriya studied at Deepti Convent School in Malkangiri till Class VII before shifting to Semiliguda where she completed her intermediate course and later moved to Bhubaneswar to study engineering.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has congratulated Lakra for the rare feat achieved through dedication and grit and said it will set an example for others to emulate.

“I am happy to learn about the success of Anupriya Lakra. The success achieved by her through dedicated efforts and perseverance is an example for many,” he tweeted.
