A fine of Rs 15 lakh was also imposed on Rajesh by the court.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar on Thursday convicted Rajesh for killing his wife Anupama, an Odia girl, in cold blood. Rajesh was found guilty under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destroying evidence).

On October 17, 2010 Anupama was beaten to death by Rajesh at Prakash Nagar in Dehradun Cantonment. In the two months that followed, Gulati chopped Anupama’s body parts and stored them in a deep freezer. Every now and then, he would dispose of some body parts in the jungles on the outskirts of Dehradun.

The brutal murder, which sent shock-waves in Dehradun, came to light when Anupama’s brother Sujan Kumar Pradhan, worried about not hearing from his sister in a long time, landed at the couple’s doorsteps.

Sujan lodged a missing complaint at the Cantonment Police station when Rajesh could not tell him about his sister’s whereabouts and also refused to let him enter the house.

After being arrested, Rajesh confessed to the murder, saying he hid the body in the bathroom for two days before using an electric grinder to cut her body parts and hiding it in the deep-freezer for nearly two months.

The police later found Anupama’s foot wrapped in a polythene bag in a jungle on the foothills of Mussoorie, where Rajesh had thrown pieces of the body.
