Bargarh: Adding to the tragic episode of farmers’ suicide in the state over crop loss, a farmer of Nuakhairpali village in Bargarh district succumbed after suicide attempt, today.
The deceased farmer has been identified as P Navin Kumar.
Kumar’s family members informed that he was under immense mental stress after suffering a crop loss of 10 acres of land over last few days. Finding it impossible to repay the loan he had taken from village money lenders and banks for the purpose, he consumed poison on Saturday.
Kumar was rushed to VIMSAR in Burla following the suicide bid where he died while undergoing treatment this morning.
Notably, another farmer Brunda Sahu of Kalapani village in the district also committed suicide after November 1, a day after setting his paddy crops on fire, over Brown Plant Hopper Pest (BPHP) attack. State Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout asked the district Collector to submit a report over the suicide of the farmer within 48 hours following the incident. Later, he appealed farmers not to torch their agricultural produce dubbing the act to be a disrespect to Goddess Laxmi.
