Another Bargarh farmer commits suicide over crop loss, loan burden

Bargarh: Adding to the unremitting wave of farmer suicide in the state, another Bargarh farmer died yesterday evening after attempting suicide and remaining in hospital for over a week.

The deceased farmer identified as Daitari Rana of Barpali village under Kansada panchayat under Paikamal police limits in the district. He had taken the extreme step by consuming pesticides on December 5 over crop loss and loan burden. He remained admitted in the VIMSAR hospital in Burla since then.

As per the sources from Daitari’s family, he had cropped paddy of 15 Acres which got damaged due to pest attack and untimely rain, subsequently. He had taken loan from various sources including Rs 2 lakh from local money lenders, Rs 30000 from UCO bank and RS 80000 from UGB bank for farming purpose. Finding it difficult to repay the loan following the crop damage he took the extreme step.

Following the death of the farmer, locals stage a blockade at Paikamal Square keeping the dead body. They demanded suitable compensation to the kin of the farmer. The blockade was removed only after an assurance for the same by the district administration.
