Angul: An angry mob in Chandanpur village under Bantala police limits in the district blocked three police officials while the latter were trying to rescue two alleged thieves detained by the villagers on Saturday.
The villagers caught the thieves and beat them up after they were allegedly found stealing electricity cables in the area.
When the police visited the village in the morning to rescue the detained youths, residents argued with them and blocked their vehicle for hours.
However, after a long and heated argument, the police managed to take the alleged thieves into their custody and seized the stolen electricity cables.
“Incidents of stealing have been increasing day by day in our village and the police are not taking any action to check the miscreants despite our repeated complaints in this regard,” a villager told Kalinga TV on condition of anonymity.
“Today, we caught these two thieves red-handed while they were trying to steal the electricity cables in our village. We detained them and called the police”, he added.
The police registered cases of assault and wrongful confinement against some villagers, sources said.
