Ambulance Driver Holds Patient And His Family Hostage In Odisha’s Nuapada

Nuapada: An Ambulance driver has kept a patient and his family hostage for non-payment of fare in Nuapada district of Odisha. The incident happened in Indranagar area under Khariar police limits.

The victim identified as Dagareswar Majhi was undergoing treatment for Asthama in Veer Surendra Sai Institute Of Medical Science And Research (VIMSAR) in Burla.

Dagareswar was accompanied by his family, wife and son during the treatment period. After getting discharged from the hospital Dagareswar booked an ambulance to order to return Khariar from Burla at a cost of Rs 5000.

However when the family reached Khariar, Dagareswar paid Rs 1600  to the driver and asked him to wait for the remaining amount. Meanwhile he told the ambulance driver that the remaining money will be handed over by his relatives soon.

As there was a slight delay in the arrival of relatives the ambulance driver locked the ambulance and drove back to Burla.

The family was held hostage overnight in the vehicle until passerby rescued them. According to sources, the ambulance driver acted on the instructions of the vehicle owner and trapped the family.

After knowing about the incident Dr Shankar Ramchandrani of VIMSAR provided the family with food. He also beared the return travel expenses of Dagareswar and his family to Khariar.

The public requested the district administration to take proper steps against the ambulance driver and the owner for their unruly behaviour.
