Ajit Kumar Mohanty from Odisha takes over as BARC Director

New Delhi: Noted scientist Ajit Kumar Mohanty from Odisha took charge as the Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

Mohanty took over his new assignment from KN Vyas, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to Department of Atomic Energy.

The 60-year-old physicist is also the Director of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata.

Born in Odisha in 1959, Mohanty completed his graduation in 1979 with honours in Physics from MPC College in Mayurbhanj’s Baripada. He did his post-graduation in 1981 from the Cuttack-based Ravenshaw University.

In 1983, he joined the BARC’s Nuclear Physics Division after graduating from the 26th batch of the BARC Training School. Simultaneously, Mohanty also completed his doctorate from the University of Mumbai.

He graduated from the 26th batch of the BARC Training School and joined Nuclear Physics Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1983.

During the past 36 years, he has worked in several areas of nuclear physics covering collision energy from sub-Coulomb barrier to relativistic regime.

Mohanty is the recipient of Young Scientists Award of Indian Physical Society (1988), Young Physicist Award by Indian National Science Academy (1991) and Department of Atomic Energy Homi Bhabha Science & Technology Award (2001).
