AIIMS Convocation: Vice President proposes constant review of medical curriculum, proper rural healthcare

Bhubaneswar: While addressing at the 1st Annual Convocation of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar today, Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu laid emphasis on the constant updation of medical curriculum in the country along with the need to overcome the shortage of medical staffs.

Naidu started his speech at the convocation with a few Odia lines and welcomed the students of the premier medical institute along with their parents. Later he expressed his love for Odisha by dubbing it as a state with rich culture and tradition.

“Odisha is a state rich in culture and tradition and I am pleased to see graduating students and members of the academic procession wearing locally sourced ethnic robes so tastefully designed to reflect the rich tradition of handloom textiles, a hallmark of this state,” said the Vice President.

Terming the first convocation as an important milestone for any institute Naidu insisted it signals the culmination of training of the very first batch of students.

Giving credit to former Prime Minister of Atal Bihari Bajpayee for the setting up of AIIMS, Bhubaneswar Naidu said the institute is his brainchild which took shape in 2003, when he and CM Naveen Patnaik were Central Ministers.

“AIIMS Bhubaneswar is one of six new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences established by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare under PMSSY in 2003. The then Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee laid Foundation stone on July 15th 2003,” said the Vice President.

Highlighting the need of proper healthcare facility in the rural belts of the country, the Vice President advised Union Health Minister JP Nadda and his counterpart Pratap Jena to make necessary arrangements for making it mandatory for every doctor to serve three years in rural areas to be eligible for promotion.

“India is incomplete without Bharat. Real India lives in villages,” said Naidu by quoting lines from Mahatma Gandhi and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.

The Vice President gave out gold medals to 24 students and distributed degrees to 50 MBBS and 56 nursing students in the concluding part of the convocation.
