In the midst of an oncoming environmental crisis and rising sea levels, a floating metropolis is being built in the Indian Ocean, just ten minutes by boat from Male, the capital of the Maldives.

According to reports, the Maldives government and the Dutch business Waterstudio aim to house 20,000 people in the Maldives Floating City in less than five years.

According to the developers, habitation on the island should begin in early 2024, with completion of the full city anticipated for 2027.

The first units will be unveiled in June, with prices ranging from $150,000 for a studio apartment to $250,000 for a family house.

With 5,000 floating structures, including houses, businesses, restaurants, and schools, the city will have a brain coral-inspired design and be connected by canals. The Maldives Floating City has features like rainbow-colored homes that are meant to appeal to locals.

Broad balconies and ocean views have been added to each house. Along with walking, riding, and using electric scooters or buggies, residents will also use boats as a form of transportation.

Interestingly, this will be the second floating city in history. This represents “new optimism” for the more than 500,000 people who live in the Maldives.
