8 Bhubaneswar malls told to upgrade fire safety to avoid action

Puri: Tightening the noose around the necks of at least 8 shopping malls in the city which were found flouting the fire safety norms during an inspection by it on Saturday, the Odisha Fire Services Department slapped notices on them today.

Informing on the step, DG Fire Services, BK Sharma said issuing of notices are underway and the malls which are on the list include The World Shopping Mall in Khandagiri and Nayapalli, Forum Mart and Big Bazar in Kharvel Nagar and Nayapalli, Pantaloon Shopping Complex in Saheed Nagar, Pal Heights in Jaydev Vihar, Maruti Mall Big Bazar on Nandankanan Road, and V2 Shopping Mall in Nayapalli.

These malls have been asked to either install or restore the fire safety systems within two months. They have also been told to adhere to all 28 conditions including minimum 5 metre wide entrance along with 9 metres wide road around the mall, as per the new fire safety norms notified by the department.

The step was taken after Fire Services Department conducted a safety audit in as many as 10 shopping malls in the city on Saturday. During the audit, officials found Central and BMC Bhawani Mall in Saheed Nagar fulfilling a majority of norms and all others were found flouting fire safety measures.

In case the defaulter malls fail to make necessary fire safety arrangements in next two months they would be sealed by the department, says report.
