Jajpur: At least seven houses were gutted and six cows got critically burnt in a massive fire which broke out in Meduakula village under Bari block in Jajpur district last night.
Sparks erupted in one Uddhav Behera’s house in the village late in the night and spread very rapidly to the neighbourhood. By the time the villagers woke up from sleep and launched firefighting efforts the blaze had engulfed the houses of Madhusudan Behera and Purushottam Behera to burn down assets of lakhs.
Later as the fire spread to a cattle shed located nearby, at least six cows sustained burn injuries.
Fire services officials from Bari rushed to the spot and contained the fire in the wee hours.
While the exact cause of the fire is not known an electric short circuit is being suspect behind the mishap.
