Rourkela: A 6-day-old infant sustained critical burn injury after fire engulfed the New Born Ward of a private hospital here on Saturday.

Smokes started billowing out of the Newborn Ward of the Om Appolo Hospital located in the civil township area at around 4 AM and a blaze occurred subsequently. As the fire started spreading in the Ward very rapidly, the hospital authorities tried to bring it under control on their own without intimating the fire brigade office. However, till the fire was brought under control a 6-day-old had already sustained critical burn injury.

The infant had sustained 70-80 per cent burn injury in the mishap, as per the hospital sources.

The injured infant was first rushed to Astha Hospital in the city and later shifted the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) following deteriorating condition.

Father of the injured infant has claimed that the incident took place due to the absence of a proper fire safety system in the hospital.

“The hospital authority did not intimate the fire brigade authority about the incident due to which the infant got injured. Fire tenders reached here only after I called up them,” he added.

Meanwhile, the fire officials have informed that the fire was caused due to an electric short circuit. They said the hospital was operating without a fire prevention system on which it had also been issued notices in the past.
