51 people killed in Nor’wester since April in Odisha: Revenue Minister

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Revenue Minister Maheswar Mohanty on Monday informed that 51 persons have been killed in Nor’wester (Kala Baisakhi) induced thunderstorm in different districts of the state since April 1.

Mohanty informed that 47 persons out of 51 were killed in lightning while four people died due to Nor’wester rain.

As many as six persons were killed in lightning on a single day from Bargarh, Cuttack, Khurda, Kendrapara and Puri districts on Sunday.

Speaking about the crop damage report of six districts – Bargarh, Subarnapur, Malkangiri, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj and Dhenkanal, Mohanty informed that standing crops in nearly 24,899 hectare land have been damaged due to Kala Baisakhi. Besides, 561 houses have been damaged in seven districts due to thunderstorm, he added.

The Minister further informed that the state government will provide compensation to the people who have been affected either due to Kala Baisakhi or thunderstorm after proper verification.
