Kendrapara: In a shocking road mishap, at least five persons were killed and four others turned critical after an SUV carrying them was hit by a speeding truck at Kakatia Chhak on Cuttack-Chandbali road here today.
As per the report, the mishap took place in the wee hours today, minutes after at least five members of a family from Balikana village set out for Cuttack Railway Station to drop a member, who was leaving for Mumbai to join a new job. The family latter picked up three others from Rajpur and Mainshigodha villages to drop them at the station.
It is suspected that, driver of a speeding truck which was coming from the opposite direction failed to detect the Mahindra Bolero due to dense fog near Kakatia Chhak under Kendrapara Sadar police limit and dashed his vehicle against it from the front.
The impact of the collision was so high that at least three persons boarding the SUV died on the spot. Two others died while being transported to Nischintakoili and SCB Medicals in Cuttack by some locals.
At least four passengers who sustained critical injury are currently under treatment at SCB Medical and their conditions are stated to be critical.
Police have reached the spot and seized the mangled SUV after sending the deceased for autopsy.
