Bhubaneswar: Opposition Congress and BJP legislators on Monday cornered the state ruling BJD in the Odisha Assembly over the rising cases of rape in Odisha.

As soon as business of the House began today, legislators of Congress and BJP created ruckus demanding Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s statement on the floor of the House over the matter. Assembly Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat asked the protesting leaders to co-operate with him to run the House, however, as they continued their commotion, the Speaker first adjourned the House till 11.30 then 12.50 PM and later till 3 PM.

“It’s extremely unfortunate and shocking that four minor girls have been raped in Odisha within 24 hours. Among the victims is a minor girl who is unable to hear and speak. One more victim is battling with life in Cuttack SCB Medical. However, the Chief Minister has become a mute spectator. Hence, Congress protested it in the Assembly and demanded the Chief Minister’s statement on the floor of the House,” said Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati while speaking to the reporters.

Adding to Bahinipati’s statement, BJP MLA Rabi Narayan Naik said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet has already given nod for Ordinance on death penalty to minor girl rapists. Odisha Government and Odisha Police have got a major responsibility as the state has recorded 4 rape cases in the past 24 hours. The heinous crime of rape being meted out to minor victims is on rise.

Reacting to the statements of Bahinipati and Narayan, Government Chief Whip Amar Prasad Satpathy said, “Such incidents are really unfortunate. Odisha Police is taking prompt action and the culprits are being arrested. Odisha Government is well aware. The matter will be taken up on April 26 as the day has been slated for the discussion on Home Department. Earlier Hon’ble Chief Minister has already given his statement on crime against women and law & order situation in the state.”
