4 cops, 6 villagers injured in angry mob-police clash in Ganjam

Berhampur: At least four policemen including two senior cops sustained injuries in attack by angry mob in T Govindpur area in Berhampur of Ganjam district last night while trying to remove a road blockade.

The injured senior cops have been identified as Patapur Police Station IIC Ramesh Chandra Pradhan and ASI PK Patnaik.

Some unidentified locals intercepted a pick-up van at the Govindpur Square on Tapatapani ghati late in the night yesterday after it caused an accident. They later roughed up the driver of the van over which a brawl erupted between the two sides. After the news spread hundreds of residents from at least five villages in the area staged a road blockade on the Govindpur and Jakarapali and demanded action against the guilty.

However, the locals have alleged that instead of taking action against the guilty Patapur Police reached the spot and tried to remove the road blockade by force and resorted to mild lathi charge in which at least six persons sustained injury.

As police’s action sparked sharp reaction among the locals, they went berserk and hurled stones at the police team and later attacked it with cudgel. Patapur IIC sustained injury on his head, leg and hand along with ASI PK Patnaik.

The injured senior cops and locals were initially rushed to Mohana CHC from where the senior cop due were shifted to MKCG Medical in Berhampur later due to serious condition.

Ganjam Sub Collecter Siddharth Shankar Swain, SP Brijesh Kumar Rai have reached the spot along with a Magistrate and are trying to pacify the angry mob.

Two platoons of police force have been deployed in T Gobindapur area to maintain the law and order situation.
