Cuttack: Piyush Goyal did not have a very auspicious beginning to his new innings as Railway minister as a freight carrier skidded off the track near Sikhapur level crossing here on Sunday.
Reports say the goods train with loaded with cement started its journey from Jharsuguda this morning and was on its way to Cuttack when the mishap occurred.
At around 12 o’clock, the driver of the carrier heard a loud noise near the Sikharpur level crossing and stopped the train only to find that three wagons of the train had come off the tracks. However, no spilling of goods occurred on the spot due to the derailment.
Teams of East Coast Railway officials swung into action immediately after the incident and ordered the clearing of the route at the earliest. While the reason for the derailment is yet to be ascertained, the clearing and repair of the tracks was underway when this report was being filed.
