22 killed in stampede at Elphinstone railway station overbridge

Mumbai: At least 22 people were killed and around 50 others injured in a stampede at Elphinstone railway station’s foot overbridge in Parel, Mumbai on Friday.

Out of the 22 deceased, 18 are said to be men while the rest are women. The injured persons have been admitted to KEM hospital.

According to reports, the stampede took place around 10.30 AM on foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations owing to rain.

The locals had demanded repairing of the bridge which was narrow and not strong enough to take the busy crowd, but in vain.

The death toll is likely to go up as the rescue operation by the police with the help of commuters, is still on and some of the rescued persons are reportedly critical.

Senior Railway officers have reached the spot to monitor the situation.
