6 killed, more than 40 injured as Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express derails in UPMuzaffarnagar: At least 20 passengers were killed and above 40 others were injured after the Puri- Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express (18477) derailed at Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday evening.

Though the identities of the deceased is yet to be known, most of them are believed to be from Odisha as the train had commenced its journey from Puri on Thursday night.

The number of dead and injured travellers is expected to rise as rescue operation is still underway. The injured passengers have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

An NDRF team, along with the ATS of Uttar Pradesh police is carrying out the rescue operations.

According to reports, six bogies of the express derailed near Khatauli station around 5.46 PM while the train was on its way to Haridwar from Puri. It was to have reached Haridwar at 9 pm today.

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu directed officials to intensify the rescue operation.

“Have instructed Chairman Rly Board, Member Traffic to oversee rescue and relief operations.I am personally monitoring situation,” said Prabhu in a Twitter message.

“Sad incident, injured passengers will be given complete treatment. Directions issued for all possible assistance,” said UP CM Yogi Adityanath.
