2 women killed over witchcraft suspicion, 1 critical in Mayurbhanj

Rairangpur: At least two women were killed in axe attack while another sustained critical injury on suspicion of practising witchcraft in Madhupur village under Rairangpur police limits in Mayrubhanj district on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Karmi Murmu and Suraiya Hembram. The injured is Jaba Baske.

As per the report, the accused identified as Shyam Baske carried out the attack over sorcery suspicion over the victim trio. While Baske’s wife suffered five consecutive miscarriages in past few years he was suspecting that the deceased trio along with his aunt Jaba Baske had killed his babies with the help of black magic.

With a motive to avenge the miscarriages the accused hacked Karmi and Suraiya with an axe in the afternoon today and later shot an arrow at his aunt Jaba, injuring her critically. Later he surrendered before Jamda Police.

The injured woman was later admitted to Jamda Hospital where her condition is remains critical.

Police have seized the bodies for autopsy and started investigation into the case.
