2 killed, 7 injured in lightning during Nor’wester rain in Odisha

Cuttack/Baripada: Two persons were killed and at least seven members of a family sustained injury after being struck by lightning in separate mishaps in the state on Monday.

In the first instance, one Raju Siku’s family in Saraswatipur village under Athagarh police limits were asleep while gusty Nor’wester accompanied by heavy downpour lashed the village and lightning bolts struck their house late in the night. A guest to the family Rumkmini Gagarai (35) of Bijatala village of Mayurbhanj district died on the spot due to the mishap and another identified as Titi Gagarai (47) sustained grievous injury. Six members of Siku family were also hurt in the mishap.

The injured of the Siku family have been identified as Raju Siku (35), Jhina Siku (25), Ram Singh Siku (10), Jina Siku (9), Luduri Siku (30) and Jayram Siku (4).

All the injured were rushed to Athagarh Hospital in a 108 ambulance later in the night.

Similarly, Nor’wester played havoc in Mayurbhanj district in the afternoon yesterday and one Sido Hansdah of Ghumala village was killed after being hit by lightning. He was returning home after farming when the mishap took place.

Police reached the spot following the mishap and sent the body for autopsy.
