2 killed, 3 injured in elephant attacks in Odisha

Dhenkanal: Two persons were killed and three others were injured in two separate elephant attacks in the district today.

The deceased have been identified as Achyuta Rout of Chaulia village and Niranjan Mohanty of Damodarnali village under Gandia police limits.

Rout along with three others had reportedly gone to pluck brinjals from a vegetable garden. However, an elephant appeared in the garden all of a sudden and attacked them. They were rushed to the district headquarters hospital where Rout (52) succumbed to his injuries. The other three injured persons are still undergoing treatment in the hospital. Their condition is said to stable.

On the other hand, Niranjan Mohanty, who had gone to the field to attend nature’s call was also attacked by a jumbo. Mohanty died on the spot.

Locals staged a demonstration in the village demanding compensation for Mohanty’s family.

Forest officials have reached the spot and are pacifying the angry villagers. Besides, they have started initiative to drive the pachyderms from human habitations.
