Jajpur/Phulbani: At least two persons including a BJD Zilla Parishad member was killed and an equal number sustained injury in separate road mishaps in the state this morning.
In the first instance, Jajpur Zilla Parishad Zone No. 30 member Bhagabat Prasad Mishra was returning to his residence at Simulia village, after taking part in the last rite performance of a relative when the mishap took place. A speeding vehicle smacked into the car Bhagabat was traveling in with another person at Chorada Square leaving him dead on the spot.
The injured identified as Manoj Kumar Samal was rushed to Jajpur Road CHC by some locals following the crash where his condition is stated to be out of danger now.
A pal of gloom descended on the district following the death of Bhagabat who had been elected to the ZP on two occasions and was known to be a popular leader of the party.
In a similar road mishap, one person was killed and another turned critical after the bike they were traveling by was hit by an unknown vehicle in Sitapadi village under Baliguda police limits in Phulbani district later in the morning.
The deceased has been identified as Safir Pradhan of Gulimarapada.
Safir along with a friend was on his way back to home early in the morning when driver of the speeding vehicle coming from the opposite direction lost control over the wheels at Sitapadi Square and ended up hitting the duo. While Safir died on the spot the injured was rushed to the Baliguda Sub Divisional Hospital in critical condition after the mishap.
Police have reached the spot and rushed the body for autopsy.
