19 houses gutted, 9 families rendered homeless in Bhadrak village fire

Bhadrak: At least 19 houses belonging to nine families were gutted and assets worth lakhs lost in a massive fire which broke out in Chandimal village under Basudevpur block in the district last night.

Sparks erupted in one Debendra Biswal’s house in the village late in the night and soon spread to other houses in its neighbourhood very rapidly. Despite villagers effort to douse the fire, it took shape of a massive blaze and engulfed at least 19 houses in the village burning down furniture, electronic goods, land records, bank passbooks and cash in minutes.

Fire tenders from Basudevpur Fire Brigade office reached the spot and contained the blaze after a Herculean effort later in the night.

While the exact cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, police have started its investigation in this direction.

Meanwhile, villagers have demanded compensation for the affected families, whom the mishap has rendered homeless.
