17-year-old Nilgiri Langur dies at Nandankanan in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A day after the lone Orangutan of India passed away at Nandankanan Zoological Park here yesterday, a male Nilgiri langur died at the zoo this morning. The animal was 17 at the time of death.

As per the zoo authorities the Nilgiri langur was detected with diarrhoea and fever a few days back following which the staffs had shifted it to the isolation ward in the zoo hospital. While the langur showed some signs of improvement on May 19, it succumbed at around 6.30 am today.

Doctors at the zoo hospital said, the treatment of the langur was being carried out with consultation with experts from Centre for Wildlife Health. Bloods samples were being collected and examined on daily basis, they added.

A health committee had also examined the ailing langur at the zoo a day before yesterday.

While the cause of the death of the langur is suspected to be related to nerve disorder, the truth will come to light only after the autopsy is completed.

The Nilgiri Langur which died today had been brought to Nandankanan from Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai on September 26, 2017.

Yesterday, a 41-year-old Orangutan ‘Binny’ died at Nandankanan due to acute pneumonia and hepatitis.
