15 years imprisonment for ganja peddlers

Berhampur: The local court here today convicted two cannabis peddlers who were nabbed in January 2016 with ganja weighing 160 kilograms. The court convicted Nandan Ram and Rajeev Shah both hailing from Bihar with imprisonment of 15 years and fine of Rs 1 lakh each.

Police said that both the accused were nabbed by Golanthara police while they were transporting the ganja from Vizag to Delhi by an Indigo car. The driver of the car had run over the divider near Girisola check post when police chased the vehicle. Police said that the case was thoroughly monitored which led to the conviction.

Police said that ganja is mainly cultivated in districts such as Angul, Sambalpur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Malkangiri and Rayagada. “Though Ganjam is not known for the production of ganja, several areas in the district especially Berhampur and adjoining areas have become transit points for transportation of the contraband,” said a police official.
