12 shops gutted, goods worth Rs 15 lakh lost in market fire

Phulbani: At least 12 shops were gutted and goods worth Rs 15 lakh lost in a massive fire which broke out in Koti Bazaar in Baliguda Police Station area in the district last night.

The incident took place late in the night while all the shops in the market were shut down. Smokes were seen billowing out of a shop and was spotted by some locals staying near the market area who rang up traders and local fire brigade office. However, till the fire tenders reached the spot the blaze had spread to at least a dozen of shops reducing the goods kept inside those to ashes.

While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, Baliguda Revenue Inspector Tarini Parichha has reached the spot and assessed the loss in the mishap. He has assured that the affected shop owners would be compensated as per the government provision.

“The loss incurred in the fire mishap last night would be around Rs 15 lakh. The traders desperately need government assistance as they have lost their lone source of income to the blaze,” said an affected trader.
