Angul: Normal life virtually came to a standstill across the district during the 12-hr dawn-to-dusk Angul bandh called by Jan Jeevan Surakhya Committee today, demanding fulfillment of a four-point charter of demand including the upgradation of the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) as Super Specialty Hospital and medical college.

Traffic movement came to a grinding halt and buses stayed off the roads starting from the morning as bandh supporters resorted to picketing at several key points in Angul town. Commuters were left in a lurch as rail service was also cancelled due to a ‘rail roko’ at the Angul Railway Station.

While schools, colleges and other medical colleges remained closed in view of the bandh, places like Hulurisingha, Mahidharpur, Athamallik witnessed massive protests during which member of the Committee staged road blockades by burning tyre.

Along with the DHH upgradation, the committee is also demanding transfer of a poultry farm land to the DHH, filling up of doctor and nurse posts lying vacant in Talcher, Pallahara and Athamallik Sub-Divisional Hospitals and a 24-hr healthcare facility in the district.
