Banki: At least 12 houses were gutted and assets worth lakhs lost in a massive fire which broke out in Nua Ostia village under Banki Tehsil in Cuttack district last night.

The mishap took place in the wee hours while all were asleep in the village. Sparks first erupted in one Indrajit Behera’s house due to electric short circuit and later spread to other houses in the neighbourhood, very rapidly.

Fire brigade teams from Dampara reached the spot and brought the fire under control. However, till then the flames had engulfed properties worth lakhs.

“My brother first called up Athagarh fire office and then rang up Dampara fire office for help. However, the fire tenders reached the village very late and till then we had lost all our belongings to the fire,” alleged Behera.

“I have visited the village following the mishap and taken stock of the situation. All arrangements are being made by the district administration to provide dry foods, polythene and other necessary items to the affected families in the fire mishap. Ratagarh Revenue Inspector (RI) would visit the site for assessment of the loss soon and compensation would be granted as per the existing provision,” said Akula Mallick, BDO, Banki.
