Bhawanipatna: Hundreds of unemployed youths with the support of locals observed a dawn-to-dusk bandh in Kalahandi district on Wednesday. They demanded priority during certificate verification and appointment of the eligible local youths in different government jobs in the district.

Shops and other business establishments in the district especially in the district headquarters town remained closed due to the bandh.

Vehicular traffic was also partially affected in the district as the protesters blocked NH-26. Besides, they staged a demonstration in front of the Odisha Primary Education Programme Authority (OPEPA) office here.

“Candidate of our district should be given priority during appointment in government jobs. The state government should make the rule to appoint candidates in their own respective districts. Our district is being neglected by the state government,” alleged Pradipta Kumar Nayak, one of the agitators.

“We will intensify our agitation further, if our demands are not fulfilled by the state government,” he threatened.
